A free service? How do cruise experts get paid, and will I be charged extra fees?
There are no fees for our counselors’ services. They are paid by the travel suppliers — cruise lines, tour operators, hotels and airlines. In most cases the price is the same whether you book through us, directly with the supplier or with an online booking site.
Why shouldn’t I book direct?
You get expert personal help before, during and after your trip, honest advice about lines and destinations, and a counselor who keeps your budget in mind. Our counselors’ relationships and sales volume also carry weight with suppliers when it comes to perks, upgrades and problem-solving.
Will I pay more than on an online booking site?
No. Counselors have access to the same public pricing, can compare like-for-like offers, and can often find promotions or amenities that are not obvious online.
What should I think through before contacting you?
Ideally, set a budget and share it, along with when you can travel, who is going, and what kind of trip you have in mind. The more your counselor knows, the better the recommendations.
Do I pay you up front?
No. Deposit and payment rules are set by the cruise line or supplier, and payments are charged by the supplier directly to your card. Your deposit is applied directly to your reservation.
What if the travel supplier goes out of business?
It happens more often than people think. That is why Smart Traveler requires travel insurance on every trip, from a highly rated third-party insurer — never from the same supplier that provides the travel. If you already have an annual travel-insurance policy, tell your counselor.
What about passports, visas and other documents?
Counselors cannot apply for passports or visas for you, but they will tell you exactly what your itinerary requires and point you to the right place to get it.
